Aus seinen biographischen Aufzeichnungen ist bekannt, dass er durch im Elternhaus logierende Soldaten fr\u00fchen Kontakt mit dem Milit\u00e4r hatte. W\u00e4hrend seiner ersten 3 Monate in der Lateinschule stellte Mayer eine Mappe mit Pl\u00e4nen und Zeichnungen zur Milit\u00e4rarchitektur zusammen. Verschiedene Versuche eine Milit\u00e4rlaufbahn einzuschlagen schlugen fehl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Das Fortifikationsbuch entstand wahrscheinlich zur gleichen Zeit wie der Mathematische Atlas. Das &#8222;Buch&#8220; besteht aus 74 Seiten, die bisher nur als Einzelbl\u00e4tter vorliegen. Sie wurden 1983 von Eric G. Forbes in der Nicolai-Sammlung der W\u00fcrttembergischen Landesbibliothek Stuttgart entdeckt.
